NEARLY 170 GRADUATING STUDENTS from the University of New England Medical School learned where they’d spend their residency at a ceremony Friday, marking the moment with cheers, tears and calls to loved ones. The state’s only medical school joined schools across the U.S. in celebrating Match Day, when fourth-year students learn which hospital and specialty they have been paired with for the last phase of their training. UNE students and families filled the Arthur P. Girard Innovation Hall in the school’s Portland Campus, where they shared good news over champagne. Half of students matched into primary care fields this year, and 98.4% of the class was matched with a program, UNE said. Fifteen percent of students will complete residencies in Maine, and 52% will stay in New England.
